PPP was the place to learn new skills for trialing, successfully, in AKC Obedience and AKC Hunt Tests. TTTT (Teach, Train, Test, Title) is the place to prepare to trial successfully.
Hey Alice on your 2nd video when you are beside mabel in the video I noticed when giving the down command your palm was down to the ground. Your palm should be up facing to the sky. When we are way for the dog and we giving the down command signal they also see the palm of the hand. Does this make sense to you let me know.
I believe your signal stand is correct. Only thing I would slight change is the right foot planted more of an angle to give mabel opportunity of reading the foot work. Which stops her forward momentum. When Roxanne goes over this she can tell me if I’m wrong hahaha
Good morning. First video Extended Place. GOOD WORK! Pointers. 1) Excellent pre thinking on putting the white Place Boards on dark fabric so Mabel can see. That is a great setup. 2) Heel Mabel onto the Place Board you are sending her to. Heel here all the way to the front of the Place Board. Command "Heel", then give hand signal and make sure you are in correct Heel position giving that hand signal. This is important as you are training Mabel to be in Heel position BEFORE you give hand signal. This trains her to be ready or at the field start line IN Heel position before anything happens and gives you control as it also eliminates forging or creeping.
Good morning again. Second video, Signal Sit. GOOD! Really good Signal Sit. POINTERS. 1) You are allowing Mabel to creep consistently. This becomes a HUGE issue as it is giving her permission to NOT do AS in correct and proper Heel position. The truth of 'distance erodes control', BTW that is always true, is evident here . Because she is creeping and forging, without the requirement to be in correct Heel position EACH and EVERY Sit, she gets sloppier and sloppier. So REQUIRE her to give you proper AS in correct Heel position. No exceptions. Then do your specific exercise. The Heeling Stick work will help you insist on Mabel giving you correct Heel position. 2) The Down hand position, when you are beside the dog, is palm up. 3) Let's have you slow WAY down on your Heeling Signal and be MORE deliberate. Example: when starting from her Sit, bend your knees slightly and move your left hand from hanging beside left thigh to slowly moving forward besides Mabel's right eye (so it's a directional just like Place was taught in FC, Week 4). The hand moves simultaneously With as the bend left leg moves forward. This is done slowly 🐌. We are training the dog to read our mechanics and when there is an environment of great distractions, the dog needs to have learned to watch FOR and SEE your signal.
4)Your Sit Signal is perfect. When/if she creeps forward after being left in Down/Stay, push her backward with a front Down correction to the spot you left her in. What you want is that dog from Down/Stay, her Signal Sit is in the exact spot you left her in on Down. She is NOT to move forward to Sit, she is to push up from Down position into a Sit without any creeping forward.
1) Your initial left hand sweep in front of her nose with your right foot forward is correct. This 'sweep' + right foot forward communication to dog to freeze in place as you also speak "Stand". 2) It's the next piece of the Signal Stand that needs a smidgen of work to make a more fluid mechanic. The right hand then goes to the dogs chest to prevent ANY forward movement as the left hand moves to lightly touch under dogs left flank (replicating the FC Week 4 Stand). Simultaneously, as the right hand is on chest, left hand lightly touching under stomach, the left foot closes besides the planted right foot. Again, this precise footwork is communicating to dog to hold its Stand position. 3) Often in this video, you are NOT in Heel position when you leave her. Heel position is with your left leg pant seam in line with dogs right shoulder. This is super difficult to do correctly as you are learning and because Mabel is creeping causing you to be out of correct Heel position. The fix? Take a tiny step forward with right leg (so she remains in Stand), close with the left leg, THEN stand up tall and straight, "Set" her shoulders before you give Stay hand signal and step off with your right leg (indicating Stay). 4) Your Return to the Dog footwork is off which is one of the key reasons Mabel is unclear on your footwork. Remember, on the Return to Your Dog, to help the dog maintain its Position without moving, you are to step into correct Heel position with your Right foot and close with your LEFT foot . You must retrain yourself to do this consistently Alice as footwork in Advanced Classes becomes critical.
Watch Kim and Kara's recent DelMar trial videos and you will 👀 Kim's use of her footwork actually stabilizes Kara in an insanely tough environment.
The Signal Stand takes some work to get it correct as the timing and sequencing all happens so fast Recommend you video tape working Fido in front of a mirror and then you can practice in 🐌 motion and laugh a lot at yourself.
1) Your mechanics for DoR are good. However, the struggle is Mabel's creeping and her not being in Heel position as you begin.Creeping is actually disobedience. You MUST correct and train for STRICT obedience in the basics before adding in to many new concepts to fast. When the basics are off, that dominoes into the new concepts and then it all dissolves into a dog that is confused 😕.
So for Mabel's DoR, go all way back to Week 1. Work that, along with you requiring STRICT obedience (Heel with Heeling Stick work, AS in correct Heel position), and post another video later this week.
I appreciate these videos, as do the rest of your classmates, as it gives me the opportunity to review and provide specific feedback.
BTW, everyone, myself included long ago, struggles to learn these advanced exercises. None of this is easy. Breathe, relax, change what needs to be changed, and start anew. You will get this. So too will Mabel.
This is me and Mabel's practice video. I finally got my google account to work with youtube and blogger, so now this blog is much more accessible.
