Novice: Lesson 7 Prong collar & Leash use
HEELING STICK- Prong collar
introduction and leash
LESSON 7 – To polish heel position
with use of prong collar AND leash in new locations with various new
distractions.
Objective: To train the dog to pay
attention to the handler’s footwork and body mechanics.
Training Pattern:
1.
Dog is introduced to use of prong
collar with shoestring (or short line) attached to prong collar, held in
handler’s LEFT hand.
2.
Shoestring or short line has a knot
tied in it where handler’s left hand holds the shoestring or short line. The
knot location is for THAT specific dog to be in correct heel position. THERE IS
NO PRONG COLLAR ‘PRESSURE’ AS LONG AS DOG IS IN CORRECT HEEL POSITION INCLUDING
FOR AS.
3.
Leash is held in Walking Position
with right hand.
4.
Do NOT use signals with prong
collar, use your verbal “Heel” and footwork to help dog ‘read your feet’ and
obey.
5.
Work on heeling and AS with BOTH the
prong collar/shoestring and leash in Walking Position.
6.
Use your RAT, LT and RT to correct
dog out of position so as to ‘help’ that dog maintain correct heel position at
all times.
7.
Work daily until you can achieve all
3 turns and 5 AS’s successfully (that means with NO prong or leash pressure)
each day, then quit for the day.
