OPEN – EXTENDING “PLACE-BACK”: Lesson 9
EXTENDED “PLACE”, INTRO
TO CASTING
LESSON 9– To train the
ecollar conditioned dog, already doing “Place -Back” or “Back-Place” at 70-80’,
to now begin to learn casting principles. No LL is used in Lesson 9, only
ecollar pressure.
Objective- To teach the
ecollar conditioned dog to now accept a new concept using the Place Boards and
the Go-Out Command of “Back”. Dog will be taught HOW to move, from a Sit in
front of owner, to then go in reverse direction (“Back”) either to left or
right based on which hand/arm owner is using. Dog has learned how to do a
Go-Out and take instruction, with a new command, to interrupt that Go-Out and
follow a new command. *DOG SHOULD KNOW THE RANDOM “SIT” AND TO BE ABLE TO DO SO
AT A DISTANCE.*
Training Pattern:
1. Set up 3 Place Boards (plural), approximately 15’
apart in a straight line.
2. Dog is heeled to first Place Board on LL. You can use Signal Heel
or verbal “Heel”. Dog is facing the other 2 Place Boards.
3. Do the hand signal to focus dog. Remember to
softly say “Yes” when dog is locked on the next in line Place Board.
4. Stand up tall and straight and send the dog with
the “Place-Back”, LL feeding through your left “O” ring.
5. As dog gets onto the next in line Place Board,
do a verbal “Sit”. Dog is to do a Random Sit on the Place Board. *IF DOG IS NOT
FACING OWNER SQUARLY, USE THE FC WEEK 6 ACTIVE SIT MECHANICS TO REPOSITION THE
DOG. DOG MUST BE FACING THE OWNER SQUARLY IN A SIT.*
6. Owner takes a step to their right, dog is NOT to
move as implied “Stay” is within the Random “Sit”. Owner is to put right hand straight up to
sky, right inner arm close to right ear, with LL in their right hand as they
command, ‘Place-Back”. Dog is to spin in reverse to its LEFT and go to next
Place Board. If dog is unsure, owner is to use light “Tone” or low ecollar
pressure to simply provide more direction and to repeat the command until dog
succeeds.
7. Owner then proceeds to last Place Board, praises
dog and sets them up to repeat the entire sequence going in the direction they
started from. Whichever side was not done initially, is now done following the
#7 instructions above on the other arm.
8. Helps to remember that when the owner’s right
arm is casting, the dog is turning to its LEFT. When the owner’s left arm is
casting, the dog is turning to its RIGHT.
