6-7-23 Field training with hooded (and one dead already) duck

I am seeking to prepare Redd for her SH trials in Idaho in 2 weeks.  And to prepare Ruth also for her JH trials in Idaho at the same time.  Hooded ducks are 'live cripple's' so the learning dog has to learn how to pick up a still moving, flapping, quacking, duck.  None of my dogs killed these ducks, they literally died of stress. But I was delighted there were no teeth marks or crunching by ANY of my dogs in retrieving these ducks today.

The warm up

And happy to finally get ANYTHING to retrieve, especially real ducks, Pree-:)

Cavaletti practice with Molly

We practiced a little more today. I kept the same set up but sent her on an extended place. She seemed to do much better without the leash.

We’ll do more of these set ups in different locations and on different surfaces as Roxanne suggested 😊

Miss Molly

Yesterday afternoon at PPP Molly was having a hard time with the broad and the jump. She wasn’t pushing off on her back feet. However, she did this on our run earlier in the week. Her back legs looked pretty good as she pushed off to leap over the creek.

Roxanne suggested practicing cavalettis to help her with her hind legs. As you can see, neither one of us are very graceful.

We’ll keep practicing then start in again on the broad and the jump. We have some ground to cover!

Update on June/July

 Class,

The remaining PPP, Part 1, is through the end of June. We are focusing on polish work, working dogs through the Open routine, and working a dog at whatever level they are capable of doing thus far.

The last two weekends of June I am gone, Jessi will be the Lead Instructor here for those 2 Sundays.

PPP, Part II, begins the first weekend in July. Scent Discrimination, Directed Jumping, Moving Stand, Directed Retrieve (as well as continuing Signals) will be taught.  Also, there is an additional side training route for dogs ready to go onto the AKC Senior Hunt material.

Onward.
