OPEN: Broad Jump Lesson 7
THE BROAD JUMP EXERCISE
LESSON 7 – Break away WITH
motion cue introduced with LL.
Objective #1: To
incorporate the use of Cavallities WITH the Broad Jump as part of determining
dogs PoL (Point of Launch). To measure the PoL for each dog and place their
matt there, with tiered Cavallities from ground to first BJ, so the dog learns
to now jump up and over at an angle.
Training
Pattern Objective # 1:
1.
Set up jumps WITH
Cavallities in front of BJ. Video tape the dog’s BJ so you can review where
they jump from (location). The position of Cavallities will be adjusted in
Lesson 6 based on the photos you post from this week’s BJ training.
2.
Set up a PVC pipe, on
edge at right side of BJ. When dog knocks it over, they get an “OUT”. The point
of this is to begin to train the learning dog to run straight over the BJ and
not clip the edge of BJ.
3.
Now, switch to a LL and
leave dog on Sit/Stay, walk to spot beside the farthest and widest BJ with LL
in left hand.
4.
Command, “Broad” and
move straight away from BJ so dog’s leash pressure is taking them straight over
the BJ. For this week, simply do the BJ breakaway with motion cue and do NOT
attempt to get the dog to turn into SSIF. *IMPORTANT the dog learn to do
BJ straight without curving into you. Praise when dog is successful and simply
continue to walk them around to the original Sit/Stay position again.
5.
+Only do the dog in a
day as many times as it takes for success. For some dogs this is two training
sessions of 5 jumps. For some dogs this is one training session of 10 jumps.
For some dogs this is one training session with at least 5 jumps minimum.
Maximum per day is 10 jumps per day and is determined by what the handler is
seeing in their dog and the age of the dog (this matters for health reasons).

TEST:
On
Day 6, take 1 video with 3 BJ’s using Cavallities and doing the breadaway with
motion cue. Post 3 side profile shots of the dog launching specifically from
its determined PoL position. If needed, mark their PoL with chalk on the ground
so handler knows where it is.
