NOVICE: Lesson 10 Prong collar & heeling device usage

Novice: Lesson 10 Prong collar & heeling device

HEELING STICK- Prong collar (now optional) use + heeling device

LESSON 10 – To polish heel position with use of prong collar (as needed) AND heeling device leash in new locations with various new distractions.

Objective: To train the dog to focus on maintaining correct Heel position (including AS’s) based on their handler’s footwork and body mechanics.

Training Pattern:

1.      Dog should be comfortable with use of prong collar with shoestring (or short line) attached to prong collar. NOW, the shoestring is fed through the heeling device and lightly secured to handler’s left belt loop. *LENGTH OF SHOESTRING IS DETERMINED BY HEIGHT OF DOG WHEN DOG IS IN CORRECT HEEL POSITION IN AN AS AND WHEN HEELING.*

2.      Leash is held in Walking Position with right hand.

4.     Work on heeling and AS with the prong collar/shoestring attached to heeling device as described in # 1 above. Leash is in Walking Position.

5.    Use your RAT, LT and RT to correct dog out of position so as to ‘help’ that dog maintain correct heel position at all times. Use your Right Forward Diagonal Step. USE WHATEVER STEP, TURN, OR IMMEDIATE HALT YOU NEED TO REQUIRE YOUR DOG TO ‘SUCK IN’ AND CHOOSE TO MAINTAIN CORRECT HEEL POSITION AT ALL TIMES.

6.     Work daily until you can quietly praise the dog for an improved Heel position, then quit for the day.
